Dr Mathe, one of Mangosuthu University of Technology’s (MUT) top alumni and former CEO of the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI), recently assumed the role of CEO at the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA). Though only a month into his leadership at TIA, Dr Mathe confidently represented the agency as a distinguished panellist at the Post-School Education and Training (PSET) on international cooperation workshop held at the University of Pretoria from 23-24 April 2026.
At the workshop, Dr Mathe spoke passionately about TIA’s vision as a catalyst for innovation, bridging the gap between cutting-edge research and its commercialisation. His insights highlighted how TIA strategically supports the entire innovation value chain, from early-stage research through to technology transfer and market introduction.
This vision strongly aligns with the initiatives he spearheaded at MUT with SANEDI and with the IGNITE 2030 strategic framework championed by Professor Rushiella Songca, interim Vice-Chancellor of MUT. Prof Songca’s push to transform MUT into a research-intensive and innovation-driven institution resonates deeply with TIA’s mission. Her vision emphasises applied, socially responsive research and the expansion of MUT’s impact within national innovation ecosystems.
Dr Mathe’s journey, from dedicated student at MUT to CEO of a key national innovation agency, embodies the collaborative leadership vital to realising IGNITE 2030’s goals. As a committed philanthropist supporting MUT and other historically disadvantaged institutions, he champions inclusive innovation and ecosystem engagement to drive socio-economic development.
Under his stewardship, TIA aims to strengthen partnerships with universities such as MUT, enabling them to enhance research output, develop emerging researchers, and translate knowledge into tangible benefits for society. This synergy promises to accelerate MUT’s rise as a leader in transformative education and innovation.
Dr Mathe’s role exemplifies how visionary leadership and strategic collaboration can power South Africa’s knowledge economy forward, igniting innovation, fostering inclusive growth, and building sustainable futures.
