Learners from various Umlazi township high schools who attended the second edition of the Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) Open Day received valuable guidance not only on academic programmes, but also on funding opportunities and application processes.
The event, held in Umlazi Cinema on 29 April 2026, built on the success of last year’s inaugural Open Day at Vukuzakhe High School. This year’s programme included presentations from supporting divisions within MUT and from external organisations, all aimed at preparing learners for life after matric.
One of the key presentations came from Pumza Vena of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), who stressed the importance of applying for funding within the correct timeframes. Vena outlined the eligibility criteria for NSFAS funding, helping learners understand who qualifies and who does not. Vena urged learners to stay informed and organised to avoid missing out on financial assistance opportunities.
The Central Applications Office (CAO) was also represented, with Sithandiwe Mazubane guiding learners through the application process for post-matric institutions in KwaZulu-Natal. Mazubane encouraged learners to submit their applications early and ensure all details are accurate.
“There are many learners who apply through the CAO. Do not waste time; apply now and pay attention to the closing dates of different institutions,” Mazubane advised. She also explained the application fees required when submitting forms through the CAO system.
Adding to the breadth of information shared, Nonjabulo Mabaso delivered a presentation on behalf of the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA), offering insights into career opportunities in the accounting profession and pathways to becoming a qualified professional.
The inclusion of these supporting divisions ensured that learners left the Open Day with a well-rounded understanding of both academic and administrative aspects of higher education. The event continues to play a vital role in empowering learners in Umlazi township with the knowledge and tools needed to successfully transition into tertiary studies.
