Learners from King Shaka High School and Menzi High School say they are now better prepared for their future following the second edition of the Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) Open Day, held in Umlazi Township on 29 April 2026.
Organised by MUT’s Department of Marketing and Communications, the event builds on the success of last year’s inaugural Open Day at Vukuzakhe High School. The 2026 edition specifically targeted learners in the Science and Commerce streams, equipping them with information and motivation to pursue higher education.
Several learners described the event as both eye-opening and empowering. Lwandle Mweli, 18, from King Shaka High School, said the Open Day taught him the importance of taking responsibility for his future. “The future is in our hands. We need to work hard, do what we need to do on time, have goals and stick to them,” he said.
His schoolmate, Luthando Masikane, also 18 years of age, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the competitive nature of university admissions. “You need to work smart so you can get better points. There is stiff competition. I also learned that the future is now,” he said.
The 17-year-old Aphiwe Mlaba emphasised the importance of discipline and self-motivation. “We need to work smart and go beyond the minimum requirements. It must come from within us; it is our future. You also need to be ethical and disciplined. As youths, we are future leaders. We must motivate ourselves and stay away from bad influences,” he said.
Another learner, Aphelele Mahlaba, also 17 years of age, said the event helped him understand that meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to university. He also reflected on the importance of using available resources. “Your background should not determine your future. Take advantage of resources like the internet and work closely with your teachers,” he said.
Mahlaba also noted the advantage of having a nearby higher education institution. “We are lucky to have MUT very close to us. It is better to enroll at MUT as it can reduce expenses, especially for families that are struggling financially,” he added.
The Open Day continues to play a vital role in empowering learners from Umlazi Township by providing them with practical guidance and encouraging them to aim higher in their academic journeys. On 7 May 2026, MUT will be hosting a Career Day at Newcastle in collaboration with the Newcastle Local Municipality.
