The best student in the Faculty of Engineering engineers a brighter future

Ntokozo Mahlambi

While for some graduates graduation is just a ceremony, for the best students in the Faculty of Engineering it is a milestone of hope for an entire community. Coming from Ridgeview, Durban, Ntokozo Mahlambi’s journey from a humble background to academic success in the Engineering field serves as a powerful testament to the impact of discipline and a clear vision. While Mahlambi is the second in his family to graduate from a university, the weight of this achievement remains profound. He views his success as a “responsibility” rather than just a personal accolade. “This achievement is very meaningful to me and my family,” Mahlambi says. “It represents not only personal success but also hope and inspiration for those coming after me.”

Mahlambi’s high performance at MUT was as a result of a rigorous approach to her studies. Rather than aiming for a simple pass, she focused on a deep understanding of her coursework, particularly in the demanding technical subjects inherent to Engineering. The key pillars of her academic success included consistency. She developed steady study habits and effective time management from day one. Mahlambi was also proactive. She sought clarity by consulting lecturers and mentors whenever challenges arose.

Mahlambi also leveraged her practical training to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world industrial applications. “I understood that education was an opportunity to change my circumstances, and build a better future,” she explains. “This motivated me to take my studies seriously and always strive for excellence.”

Mahlambi’s inspiration was drawn from both her past and her future. Driven by the challenges she faced growing up, she saw academic excellence as the primary key to opening doors in the Engineering industry and contributing meaningfully to society. She credits the support from her family, the guidance of her lecturers, and her own unwavering faith for her ability to remain resilient during difficult periods. “Above all, I was inspired by the belief that with determination, discipline, and faith, it is possible to achieve great things despite obstacles,” Mahlambi reflects.
