SUBJECT: PLANNED WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTION – SOUTHERN AQUEDUCT SHUTDOWN

Dear Colleagues and Students,

The University would like to inform all staff and students of a planned water supply interruption as communicated by eThekwini Municipality.

The Municipality has scheduled a shutdown of the Southern Aqueduct pipeline from: Monday, 30 March 2026 at 07:00 until Tuesday, 31 March 2026.

This shutdown is necessary to allow for critical preparatory work and upgrades to the bulk water infrastructure, including the scouring of pipeline sections.

Impact on Water Supply

  • During this period, water supply may be intermittent or unavailable across affected areas supplied by the Southern Aqueduct system.
  • The Municipality will monitor reservoir levels closely, and supply may be restricted further if levels drop significantly.

Affected Areas

The shutdown will impact large parts of the Central and South regions, including but not limited to:

  • Chatsworth and surrounding areas
  • Queensburgh and Malvern
  • Shallcross and Klaarwater
  • Umlazi and surrounding sections
  • Parts of the Pinetown South system

University Advisory

All staff and students are advised to:

  • Use water sparingly during this period
  • Store water in advance where possible
  • Prepare for possible disruptions to ablution facilities and campus operations

The University is monitoring the situation and will provide updates where necessary.
