Empowering the next generation of financial professionals, the Finance and Accounting Services Sector Education and Training Authority (FASSET) has officially handed over high-end laptops to a group of deserving students at Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT). The handover ceremony, held on 18 March 2026, marked the continuation of a funding initiative that began in the 2025 academic year. The students received tuition funding and laptops. FASSET selected 16 top-performing students from the Department of Accounting, covering all levels of study, but excluding the Advanced Diploma.
As a specialised Finance SETA, FASSET’s intervention is designed to bridge the digital divide and ensure that academic excellence is not hindered by financial constraints. While the bursary covers critical tuition fees, the inclusion of a “tools of trade” allowance has been the highlight for many recipients. The laptops are considered essential tools for research, assignment submission, and modern accounting simulations. “This bursary intervention has alleviated the financial burden on our students, “Cynthia Nkosi, from the University’s Financial Aid Office, said. “The laptops are not just gifts; they are vital assets that will directly impact their academic output and future employability.”
The atmosphere at the ceremony was one of profound appreciation as students collected their devices. For many, this is the first time they have owned a personal computer, a factor they say will revolutionise their study habits. Njabulo Ndlovu, a level 4 student, made a promise. “I promise to use this laptop wisely and make sure all my assignments are done and submitted on time using my brand-new device.” Sikolethu Nxele, a second-year student, said: “Having access to a laptop will make it easier to conduct research and stay up to date. I am committed to making full use of this opportunity and working hard to achieve my academic goals.” Another second-year student, Sinqobile Ngobese, also showed her appreciation. “I am very grateful to FASSET. It will make my schoolwork much easier and enable me to complete my assignments more efficiently.”
By selecting candidates based on academic merit, FASSET continues to reinforce the importance of hard work and dedication. For the students at MUT, the partnership between their University, Van Schaik, and FASSET represents a clear investment in their potential to lead the South African economy.
