In what will be seen as a fresh start for Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT), Student Representative Council (SRC) President Mdumiseni Chonco officially welcomed the newly appointed Interim Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Rushiella Songca, during a ceremony that took place off campus on 2 March 2026. Speaking on behalf of the student body, Chonco delivered a speech centred on stability, collaboration, and renewed optimism, framing the leadership transition as a pivotal moment for the Institution.
Addressing members of the University Council, executive management, and staff, Chonco emphasised that the appointment comes at a time when the University requires a leader who prioritises “courage, vision, and integrity.” “Today marks the beginning of a renewed journey, one that brings hope, stability, and a shared commitment to the progress and excellence of our institution,” Chonco stated.
The SRC President noted that for students, whom he described as the “heart of the institution”, the effectiveness of University leadership is directly linked to their academic success and personal well-being.
Chonco was clear about the expectations the student body has for the interim administration. He highlighted several key areas where the SRC hopes to see immediate engagement and progress:
- Academic Support: Enhancing resources for student learning.
- Welfare and Housing: Improving student living conditions and accommodation.
- Financial Stability: Streamlining funding processes to alleviate student stress.
- Leadership Development: Creating more opportunities for students to grow as future national leaders.
In a gesture of solidarity, the SRC President pledged the council’s full support to the Interim Vice-Chancellor, promising to engage in constructive dialogue and good faith. He stressed that the goal is to move away from friction and toward a “student-centred Institution” where transparency and mutual respect are the standard. “Leadership is not only about authority, but about service,” Chonco reminded the audience. “It is about building trust, restoring confidence, and inspiring a collective vision for the future.”
The ceremony concluded with a warm, symbolic embrace of the new leader into the university community, with Chonco offering well-wishes for a tenure defined by “progress, unity, and impactful leadership.”
