Mangosuthu University of Technology clarifies context regarding registration-related social media videos

Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) has noted the circulation of videos on social media depicting prospective students being denied entry to campus and spending the evening on the pavement. The University considers it important to place the facts on record, and to provide clarity on the context surrounding these incidents.

The University has, over an extended period, communicated clearly and consistently across all its communication platforms that walk-in registrations would not be accommodated. Throughout the year, MUT officials visited more than 500 high schools, attended several Career Fairs and Career Exhibitions, and partnered with various municipalities, during which presentations were given on the qualifications offered by the University. These engagements explicitly outlined the application and admissions processes, including the requirement that applicants select MUT as a first-choice institution, and wait for formal outcomes.

Following the release of matric results in mid-January 2026, many prospective students arrived on campus without firm offers of admission, and without an SMS confirming their student numbers. Many of these students had initially applied to institutions with higher entrance requirements and, upon receiving outcomes that did not meet expectations, sought alternative options at MUT. Unfortunately, this surge resulted in campus congestion and impeded efficient access for students who had received confirmed offers. The University also experienced technical glitches at the commencement of registration on 19 January 2026, which exacerbated the situation. In spite of all the challenges the University experienced, MUT has now registered more than 50% of the first-year students.

The University repeatedly communicated that only students with firm offers should report to campus. Prospective students were advised to monitor their Central Applications Office (CAO) application status, and to come to campus only once formal offers had been issued. Despite repeated messaging on our various platforms, students without confirmed offers continued to arrive.

In instances where students were unable to complete registration, the University intervened and provided accommodation and meals on two consecutive occasions. It is important to clarify that during this period, no external individual, organisation, or political party provided food or any form of support. The University alone ensured that affected students were assisted.

In addition to eight venues (seven Laboratories and one Hall), three holding venues have been allocated for different categories of new students who require assistance.

Additional staff have been deployed to the Call Centre, and prospective students are continually updated via our website and other platforms. All registration venues have water dispensers, and bottled water was handed out to students and parents waiting in queues.

Recognising the growing demand and the need for dignified and sustainable support, MUT formally approached Gift of the Givers on Thursday, 22 January 2026. The organisation responded within hours and worked collaboratively with the University to put in place a structured plan for the provision of cooked meals in a dignified manner. This support is scheduled to run from 23 January 2026 to 1 February 2026.

MUT remains steadfast in its commitment to being a home away from home for its students. The University further wishes to dispel any public claims suggesting that individuals or political parties provided support during this period, as these claims are factually incorrect.
