The Camp Comm application, developed through the support of the TIA Seed Fund and managed by the MUT Technology Transfer Office, is a prime example of how University-driven innovation can translate into meaningful real-world solutions. Designed to enhance coordination and communication at academic and professional programmes, the platform is currently being deployed at the WIPO South Africa Summer School, a flagship hybrid training programme attended by participants from across the region and around the world.
Dr Mandla Hlongwane, Deputy Director: Technology Transfer Office, in the Research directorate, said Camp Comm provides a seamless, digital-first approach to event management. The system enables real-time attendance tracking through digital check-ins, replacing manual registers and ensuring accurate participation records. It also centralises announcements and updates, giving organisers an efficient way to share schedules, reminders, and important notices with all attendees; and integrates communication tools that connect both in-person and online participants, supporting interaction, collaboration, and engagement regardless of location. The application also gives hybrid event support, helping coordinators manage activities smoothly across virtual and physical environments.
Continued Dr Hlongwane: “Its successful deployment at an international event like the WIPO SA Summer School, demonstrates the app’s robustness, scalability, and practical value. More importantly, it serves as clear proof of concept showing how technology developed within the University setting can address real operational needs and contribute to the advancement of educational and professional programmes,” he said.
The Camp Comm project reflects the University’s commitment to fostering innovation, empowering student and staff creators, and developing solutions with measurable societal and industry impact.
