The Department of Institutional Planning and Research (DIPR), led by Dr Liile Lekena-Bayaga, Acting Senior Director, has expertly organised a Senior Management Lekgotla focused on the development of the Annual Performance Plan (APP) and Individual Operational Plans (IOPs) for 2026 from 10-12 September 2025.
This off-site session was thoughtfully arranged to encourage reflective thinking and strategic engagement, marking an important milestone in Mangosuthu University of Technology’s (MUT) journey toward Vision 2030. The gathering began with a careful revisitation of the forthcoming Vision 2030 Strategy, a comprehensive and ambitious framework for institutional transformation.
“How we will be taking MUT to the next level over the next five years,” was the rallying cry of an inspired Dr Lekena-Bayaga, who has not only been pivotal in crafting the Vision 2030 Strategy with various teams, but is now championing its operationalisation through robust performance indicators and planning frameworks.
The DIPR, under her leadership, has adopted a systems-thinking approach that is fundamentally anchored in a Theory of Change (ToC) model. This model meticulously delineates the alignment of inputs, comprising resources, capabilities, and partnerships, with targeted activities and outputs, all of which are designed to support the desired outcomes. These outcomes include enhanced student success, increased research productivity, positive community impact, and the institution’s sustainability. The overarching impact envisioned is the fostering of a more agile, innovative, and socially responsive university.
The approach aligns with globally recognised governance frameworks, such as the King IV and King V Reporting Standards, with emphasis on ethical leadership, performance, and value creation, as well as stakeholder inclusivity. Additionally, the lekgotla outcomes are framed to contribute directly to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the areas of Quality Education (SDG 4), Gender Equality (SDG 5), and Reduced Inequality (SDG 10).
As the 2026 performance cycle begins to take shape, the University community can look forward to a transformative phase driven by strategic coherence and an unwavering focus on impact.
“We’re not just planning; we are building a legacy for the future. This is about excellence, impact, and taking MUT to the next level with a clear roadmap in hand,” concluded Dr Lekena-Bayaga. The lekgotla showcased not just planning excellence, but also a cohesive leadership culture intent on transforming MUT into a high-impact, globally respected institution.
Beyond strategic planning, the lekgotla cultivated a rejuvenated spirit among the University’s senior management. The getaway fostered collegiality, agility, and renewed purpose, reinforcing MUT’s commitment to leadership excellence, institutional resilience, and collaborative governance.
