Beyond bricks and mortar: an engineer’s gift to his alma mater

Thembela Makhoba

When Thembela Makhoba, a Civil Engineering Technologist at eThekwini Municipality and a member of MUT’s Convocation Executive Committee (Convex), donated R30,000 to his alma mater, it was not just a financial gesture; it was a declaration of loyalty, gratitude, and a vision for the Institution that shaped him. “I see this contribution as more than just financial support,” Makhoba said. “It aligns with the Convex’s mission of fostering a strong and active alumni community that gives back meaningfully to MUT.”

In his professional life, Makhoba’s work is all about building resilient and inclusive communities; from planning and implementing water and sanitation projects, to promoting good governance in public service. This same spirit of service guides his commitment to MUT, as he works to ensure the University remains a hub of opportunity for future generations. For Makhoba, alumni giving is both an act of gratitude and a responsibility. He recognises MUT’s role in his personal and professional journey while ensuring others can benefit in the same way.

“Giving back is not about the size of the contribution,” Makhoba said. “It is about unity and commitment to MUT’s success. Whether through finances, mentorship, or professional guidance, every effort helps shape the lives of students who will one day follow in our footsteps.” As a leader rooted in the engineering industry, Makhoba sees alumni as crucial connectors, creating internships, mentoring graduates, and advocating for MUT talent in the workplace. This bridge between academia and industry ensures graduates are not only employable, but also competitive in the global space.

Makhoba credits MUT with providing more than just technical knowledge; it instilled in him the resilience, discipline, and innovation that continue to guide his service to the community and country. These are the same qualities that now fuel his desire to strengthen the University through alumni action. Through his work with the Convocation Executive, Makhoba envisions leaving behind a legacy of impactful giving and sustainable alumni initiatives. His dream is to see MUT recognized as a leading hub of innovation, entrepreneurship, and excellence in higher education within the next decade.

“Alumni have a key role to play by building strong networks, driving mentorship, and mobilising resources. Together, we can secure opportunities for generations to come.” Makhoba calls on his fellow MUT alumni to support in whatever way they can. “Every act of giving, no matter the size, fuels our alma mater’s success.” This gesture of loyalty and foresight has been warmly received by the University’s Alumni Relations Office in Institutional Advancement and will be recognised further. “We are deeply grateful for Makhoba’s generous pledge, which reflects both his commitment to MUT and his vision for its future,” says Maidi Baloyi, Alumni Officer.
