The University departments continue the highlight to the local schools the importance of science as a learning field that will play a vital part in the future of their learners. Dr Thanda Mbanjwa, a Lecturer in the Department of Nature Conservation, said that on 21 August 2025, they hosted the Science Show Competition at Ndukwenhle Secondary School, R Section, Umlazi. This was a University Community Engagement initiative. The competition brought together learners from the following schools Umlazi Township: Ndukwenhle Secondary School, Shumayela Secondary School, Igagasi Secondary School, and Umbelebele Secondary School.

Dr Mbanjwa said the event aimed to achieve the following: promote scientific curiosity and innovation among learners, helping them develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills; bridge the gap between theory and practice by showing learners how science can address community and global challenges; build confidence and communication skills through presentations and teamwork; and inspires career pathways in STEM fields by exposing learners to mentors, university lecturers, and industry experts.

The learners had the opportunity to conduct scientific experiments, participate in live demonstrations, and lead innovations, creating a platform to explore the practical applications of science beyond the classroom. “Both the Life Sciences and Physical Sciences subject advisors were present. This added further academic depth and inspiration for the learners, bridging classroom theory with real-world applications,” said Dr Mbanjwa.

Bukhosibakhe Mzolo, Inspector from the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education, expressed his excitement and gratitude for the initiative. Mzolo commended MUT for inspiring learners and strengthening the foundation of science education. “I believe today’s event highlighted the transformative role of science education, community engagement, and collaboration between schools, universities, and local organisations in shaping a brighter future for learners,” said Mzolo.
