Dear MUT community
Since 2024, Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) has revitalised its relationship with the Denis Hurley Centre, allowing our students to volunteer regularly at the Centre’s soup kitchen. Our students have embraced this opportunity with enthusiasm, commitment, and consistency, proudly contributing to this vital community initiative.
The Denis Hurley Centre, a non-governmental organisation based in inner-city Durban, offers a variety of services to meet the needs of vulnerable communities. Among its key services is the daily provision of breakfast and lunch to the homeless.
In honour of Mandela Month, our student volunteers are aiming to take their service one step further. They plan to take ownership of the entire meal preparation process — from sourcing raw ingredients to preparing, serving meals, and engaging meaningfully with the homeless community.
To support this initiative, the Community Engagement and Development (CEAD) Directorate kindly invites the MUT community to contribute by pledging to donate items needed for the meal preparation. A list of required items is attached.
To make your pledge, please contact any of the following:
- Dr Mfanozelwe Shozi – shozi.mfanozelwe@mut.ac.za | Ext. 9416
- Ms Thobile Mbhele – mbhele.dudu@gmail.com | Ext. 9422
- Ms Senamile Shabalala – ShabalalaS@mut.ac.za | Ext. 9422
N.B Staff members are warmly invited to volunteer on 24 July 2025 to help prepare and serve breakfast and lunch at the Denis Hurley Centre. Please note that space is limited, and participation will be confirmed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Let’s come together as the MUT community to honour Madiba’s legacy by making a tangible difference in the lives of those in need.
