The pupils of some Umlazi Township schools have once again benefited from CEAD-registered projects. The Fundanathi Literacy Project was rolled out to pupils of Sizwakele Primary, Ngqayizivele Primary and Bavumile Primary on 16 May 2025. The project is run by the Department of Communication’s Dr Nobuhle Ndaba and her colleagues in the department.
Dr Ndaba said the project aims to foster early childhood literacy among primary school learners in a digital world. The project forms part of CEAD’s broader vision to use academic expertise to address societal challenges through practical engagement with local communities. Dr Ndaba said the Fundanathi Literacy Project is designed to support basic literacy and build a foundation for the next generation of higher education students.
Ntokozo Zulu, a lecturer in the Department of Communication addressed both learners and teachers on the realities, challenges, and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence (AI) in the context of literacy. Learners were exposed to discussions that emphasized the importance of reading in the digital age, while teachers were equipped with insights on how to balance traditional literacy practices with modern technological tools.
In his address, Circuit Manager of the Umlazi District, Bukhosibakhe Mzolo, applauded MUT’s initiative, commending the University for taking tangible steps to tackle the literacy crisis among children, and lessening the load for the Department of Basic Education. The event was supported by eThekwini Libraries and Van Schaik Bookstores.
