100 Days of Listening, Learning and Leading: Professor Rushiella Songca Reflects on Her First 100 Days at MUT
UMLAZI, DURBAN – 09 June 2026
As Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) marks 100 days since the appointment of Interim Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Rushiella Songca, the institution reflects on a period characterised by engagement, strategic alignment, and a renewed commitment to delivering on the aspirations of IGNITE 2030.
Since assuming office on 2 March 2026, Professor Songca has embarked on an extensive engagement programme that placed listening at the centre of leadership. Through engagements with students, staff, organised labour, parents, alumni, researchers, government representatives, industry partners, community leaders and international stakeholders, she sought to understand the opportunities, challenges and aspirations shaping the university’s future.
Reflecting on the milestone, Professor Songca said:
“I arrived at MUT at a pivotal moment in its history. The university was entering a new strategic era through IGNITE 2030, and I believed that before leading change, I first needed to understand the institution, its people and its aspirations. These first 100 days have reinforced my belief that meaningful leadership begins with listening.”
The engagement process has informed several strategic interventions aligned to the University’s five strategic goals: Future-Fit Learning and Teaching; Financial Sustainability; Research, Innovation and Digital Transformation; Strategic Partnerships, Internationalisation and Visibility; and an Engaging, Inclusive and Supportive Environment.
Among the notable achievements during the period were:
Strengthening Academic Excellence
MUT continued advancing its Future-Fit Learning and Teaching agenda through initiatives aimed at enhancing student success and academic innovation. The University also intensified engagements with the Department of Higher Education and Training and the Council on Higher Education to expand its Programme Qualification Mix and create pathways for future postgraduate growth.
Securing strategic investments
A significant milestone was the allocation of approximately R58.8 million through the Sibusiso Bengu Development Programme. The funding will support infrastructure development, postgraduate facilities, sporting programmes, community outreach initiatives, the expansion of MUT Radio and the establishment of a dedicated International Office.
Building a research-driven institution
To strengthen research capacity and productivity, Council approved an additional R2 million research support allocation. Preparations were also finalised for the launch of a Research Impact Vlog Series to showcase the societal relevance and impact of MUT research.
Expanding partnerships and global engagement
The University formalised the Friends of MUT Network, creating a structured platform for stakeholder engagement, philanthropy and partnership development. MUT also strengthened its international footprint through new collaborations, including a partnership with the International University of Rabat, participation in BRICS-related academic initiatives and contributions to international research collaborations.
Enhancing institutional culture and governance
Progress was made in strengthening governance systems through the approval of a new Supply Chain Management Policy and the appointment of key executives. The University also advanced plans for a Student Ambassador Programme, digital registration improvements and infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the student experience.
One of the most symbolic moments of Professor Songca’s first 100 days was her visit to the family home and final resting place of MUT founder, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
“The visit served as a powerful reminder of the vision and courage that gave birth to this institution. It reinforced our responsibility to preserve that legacy while ensuring that MUT continues to evolve and thrive for future generations,” she said.
Looking ahead, Professor Songca emphasised that the next phase of leadership will focus on accelerating the implementation of IGNITE 2030 through strengthened governance, research excellence, student success, financial sustainability, digital transformation and strategic partnerships.
“The first 100 days have demonstrated what is possible when we listen before we lead, engage before we decide, and collaborate before we act. While much work lies ahead, I remain inspired by the commitment of our students, staff, Council, alumni and stakeholders. Together, we will continue to shape and own the future of MUT.”
As MUT commemorates this milestone, the University reaffirms its commitment to its vision of becoming a leading University of Technology advancing transformative education, pioneering research and innovation, and inclusive development.
