As an attempt to ensure that staff and students are aware of the services offered by the Teaching and Learning Development Centre (TLDC), the Centre hosted a vibrant and interactive ‘Know Your TLDC Open Day ‘ on 24 and 25 July 2025 at the North and Main Campuses, respectively. The event aimed to bridge the gap between institutional support and student awareness, promoting a culture of academic excellence, retention, and success. The event served as a platform to showcase the critical role the TLDC plays in enhancing teaching excellence, promoting digital learning, and supporting student success across the University.

The TLDC is a central academic support structure in the Institution, whose work focuses on three key areas, which are e-Learning, which provides digital learning solutions, virtual platforms, and technology integration in teaching; Teaching Professional Development, that equips academic staff with innovative pedagogical strategies, curriculum design, and assessment practices; and Student Academic Support, a comprehensive cluster of initiatives. This cluster is made up of Academic Literacy and Language Unit (ALLU), Mathematics and Science Education (MSEU), First-Year Experience (FYE), Student Academic Advising, Peer Assisted Learning (PAL)

and the Writing Centre. During the Open Day, each unit hosted interactive exhibitions that offered students and staff insights into their programmes and initiatives. The units offered engaging and informative displays, games, quizzes, and insightful resources.

The TLDC Open Day, which was well-attended, was not only a showcase but also a celebration of collaboration and innovation. The live MUT Radio broadcast and student competitions added to the festive and informative atmosphere, ensuring meaningful engagement with the university community.

The Writing Centre’s Dr Nondumiso Shabangu-Zulu, said that hosting this Open Day, the TLDC reaffirmed its commitment to empowering both staff and students and strengthening the learning ecosystem at MUT.
