Sport Minister inspires fatherless boys to dream big and believe in themselves

Minister Gayton McKenzie with the boys

Excitement filled the air as young boys from various local schools eagerly awaited inspiration from Minister of Sport and Recreation Gayton McKenzie last week in KwaZulu-Natal. With an electric atmosphere and bright eyes, these boys gathered to hear a message of hope and empowerment from a man determined to uplift the next generation.

Minister McKenzie, embodying what it means to be a caring leader, took centre stage at MUT on May 10, 2025, addressing the challenges faced by fatherless boys. He didn’t sugarcoat the hard truth; instead, he passionately urged the boys not to dwell on their current situations or the absence of their fathers. “Don’t let your past shape your future!” he proclaimed, igniting a spark of determination in every young heart. Declaring himself a father figure to these boys, he drew on his own life story, exemplifying resilience in the face of adversity.

With deep emotion, he expressed his disgust for men who abandon their children, referring to absentee fathers as “that thing,” underscoring the importance of taking control of one’s destiny. “Life is not about how you start. It’s about how you finish,” he declared, his voice booming with conviction. He shared how his own journey, starting from nothing and overcoming tremendous obstacles, equipped him to achieve greatness. From selling fish to building a successful business and eventually enjoying the fruits of his labour, he encouraged the boys to dream without limits.

He highlighted role models like Ashwin Willemse, a rugby player who transcended humble beginnings to triumph on the world stage with the Springboks. “You don’t have to endure what I went through to succeed,” McKenzie said, emphasising the power of self-belief, guidance, and dreams.

But he didn’t stop there! Committed to being their champion, Minister McKenzie announced that he would host a special lunch for the boys at his favourite restaurant, providing them with a rare opportunity not just to eat but to connect and learn. The day was filled with inspiration, as the boys soaked in wisdom from various speakers throughout the programme.

With a champion’s spirit and a heart for change, Minister McKenzie left these young boys buzzing with excitement, igniting a flame of belief that they, too, can rise and make their mark on the world.
