This week marked a defining moment in the leadership journey of Mangosuthu University of Technology, where, with warmth and composure, Acting Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Dr Anette Mienie communicated the appointment of Professor Rushiella Songca to MUT. Professor Songca has been appointed as an Interim Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the Institution. Dr Mienie’s words were deeply collegial. “Please join me in warmly welcoming Professor Songca to the MUT community. We look forward to her leadership and to working together in advancing our shared vision for excellence, innovation, and transformative impact,” Dr Mienie said.
In that simple yet powerful gesture, Dr Mienie demonstrated what authentic academic leadership looks like. A moment that reflected institutional maturity over personal position. Acting in a role often defined by temporary authority, Dr Mienie chose not to centre herself on herself, but on the continuity of the University. Her introduction signalled that leadership at MUT is not about individuals, but about stewardship.
Her words revealed several defining leadership qualities: collegiality and a belief that succession is not a loss but a renewal. Dr Mienie reinforced the idea that universities thrive on collective responsibility. Her tone conveyed confidence, a clear sign of emotional intelligence and institutional loyalty. When she said, “our shared vision for excellence, innovation, and transformative impact,” she subtly affirmed that the University’s direction remains steady. Transitions do not derail vision; they strengthen it when handled with integrity and the necessary care.
In welcoming Professor Songca, Dr Mienie also modelled the very values that MUT teaches: mutual respect, ubuntu, transparency, and commitment to a purpose greater than oneself.
And so, the story of this week is not only about a new Interim Vice-Chancellor and Principal stepping forward. It is also about an acting leader who understands that true leadership is measured not only by how one leads, but by how one hands over.
Dr Anette Mienie affirmed that at MUT, leadership is continuous, collegial, and anchored in shared vision.
