The level of football played by the high schools in the annual MUT Schools Community Cup demonstrated maturity, as it was less open than the primary schools’ game the previous day, 18 August 2025, on the outer fields of the King Zwelithini Stadium. On the second day of the tournament, the following schools tested their strengths against each other: Enaleni High, Igagasi High, King Shaka High, Shumayela High, Swelihle High, Umlazi Comtech, Zwelethu High, and Zwelibanzi High.
After a nil-all stalemate, Shumayela High won 5-4 on a penalty shootout against Zwelibanzi. The winning school’s coach, Mondli Ngcobo, an MUT Civil Engineering graduate, said the team is built on a foundation of respect, which results in good team spirit and mutual understanding. He said his players take instructions well. He, with his technical team, have built harmony and unity in the team, he said. “Also parents and the teachers make my job easier,” Ngcobo said.
The principal of Shumayela High School, Mthokozisi Mabaso, highlighted the importance of sport in education. Mabaso said he looked upon Vuma Mfeka, a member of the local organising committee (LOC). Mfeka is a retired professional player and school principal.
Siyabulela Mkwalo, Deputy Director: MUT Sport and Recreation unit, said the players played great football. “Losing in the penalty shootout is not a shame. The principal message is important. A school that plays sports tends to do well academically. Mr Principal, please tell everyone about your school’s victory,” Mkwalo said. Turning to the learners of all the schools, he advised them to “ignore the bad things. Please work hard. We are preparing you for the future. Stay away from violence,” Mkwalo said.
