The Organisation for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) South Africa National Chapter (SANC) has announced the appointment of Nokukhanya Thembane as its official Ambassador to Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT).
Thembane, a committed advocate for gender equality in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), will play a pivotal role in advancing OWSD SANC’s mission to empower women scientists and foster inclusive research environments across South Africa.
As part of a national network of Ambassadors, Thembane will lead initiatives at MUT aimed at promoting STEM opportunities for women, including mentorship, outreach, and policy advocacy. She will also serve as a liaison between OWSD SANC and the university, working closely with institutional leadership and academic departments to drive change and inspire the next generation of women scientists.
In a formal letter addressed to Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Engagement, Professor Nokuthula Sibiya, OWSD SANC requested institutional support to enable Thembane’s success. This includes assistance with internal communication channels, event coordination, and policy engagement.
“We believe that a strong partnership between OWSD SANC and Mangosuthu University of Technology, facilitated by Nokukhanya Thembane, will significantly contribute to nurturing a vibrant and inclusive research environment for women in STEM,” the organisation stated.
The appointment marks another strategic step by OWSD SANC to extend its reach and create collaborative, supportive communities for women in science across South Africa’s higher education institutions.
Thembane is expected to initiate discussions with MUT leadership in the coming weeks to outline her agenda and begin implementing programs on campus.
