NRF grants Research Professor funding for this research

Professor Aubrey Mokoena

One of the University Research Professors has secured funding for his project titled: The Intervening Effect of Multiple/Cumulative Adversaries on Parenting and Human Life Course Development in A Vulnerable Community: An Interdisciplinary Perspective”.  The project will be funded by the DSI‐NRF Centre of Excellence in Human Development, located at the University of Witwatersrand. Professor Aubrey Mokoena has received R300,000 for his project. This grant is made so that the Centre of Excellence in Human Development may achieve its mandate of, among others, “concentrate existing capacity and resources to enable researchers to collaborate across disciplines, and to enhance the pursuit of research excellence and capacity development in the field of human development”.  The Grant will be awarded for 12 months, and may be renewed depending on the availability of funds. Professor Mokoena has submitted a report detailing the activities implemented and has one paper in press or published in an accredited peer-reviewed journal.

Responding to the news, Professor Mokoena said he was excited and honoured to share that he has been awarded funding to lead a project in human development. “This opportunity will allow me to engage deeply with critical issues affecting social and developmental outcomes in vulnerable contexts. The project will focus on an interdisciplinary perspective on the effect of multiple/cumulative adversaries towards parenting and human life course development in a vulnerable community to contribute evidence-based insights that inform both policy and practice,” said Professor Mokoena. Professor Mokoena said he was looking forward to collaborating with his peers, stakeholders, and communities to advance “our collective understanding of sustainable human development”.

Professor Mokoena has urged researchers to attend NRF presentations regarding funding opportunities available, as well as workshops on writing/developing funding proposals. He is presently supervising four students that are studying towards this qualification.
