Once again, MUT was part of the 28th edition of The Time of the Writer festival that ran from 18 to 23 March 2025. The theme of this year’s festival was Imagination, Freedom, and Accountability. This theme resulted in inspiring conversations, thought-provoking panels, and creative storytelling, as was observed by Zinhle Mbili of the University’s Institutional Advancement (IA). Mbili, a known lover of arts, said “this premier literary event explored the boundless power of words”. Mbili said that art presentations expose students to alternative modes of expression, enriching their problem-solving abilities, enhance critical thinking and communication skills. “They also provide a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration, where technological advancements can merge with creative storytelling, digital media and visual arts,” she said.

The MUT segment of the festival that took place on 20 March 2025, was facilitated by the reading activist, writer and publisher, Lorraine Sithole. This segment involved an interactive writing experience; Sithole also shared her own experiences during this time. The event saw an encouraging turnout, with the venue being filled with students and staff who actively participated.

The arts have been an integral part of my personal and professional journey, shaping my ability to think critically and creatively. My engagement with the arts has allowed me to navigate the complexities of human experience through storytelling and expression”, Mbili said. She further stated that the ability to merge technical knowledge with artistic sensibility has been invaluable in research, communication, and community engagement. “The arts offer a lens to interpret societal changes, bridge cultural gaps and inspire innovative solutions,” she concluded.
