The Learning and Teaching Directorate deserves a huge round of applause for shining a spotlight on our top-performing students! Their commitment goes beyond accolades; it is about creating lasting memories by inviting the parents of these exceptional students to celebrate their achievements together.
On December 10, 2025, we witnessed an inspiring celebration honouring two outstanding students from the Faculties of Engineering and Management Sciences for their remarkable academic accomplishments. This event was a heartfelt tribute to the support systems that help these students soar.
While the number of students who enrol for Engineering programmes at the country’s universities is still not enough, it is more than pleasing to note that those who have enrolled for these programmes are doing very well. Some of these are two MUT young students from Durban’s Clermont.
Ntokozo Myeza, a second-year Diploma in Building, was awarded the Top Achieving Student in the Faculty of Engineering. Myeza said that receiving this award “is truly one of the most humbling and surreal moments of my life. I honestly did not expect it. Even now, it still feels unreal. I am deeply honoured and grateful”. Explaining the reasons for her success, Myeza said that attending lectures was a big part of it. “Consistency, preparation and putting in the extra hours really helped me.
Being in class helped me understand what the lecturers expected from us. It allowed me to stay aligned with the course requirements. I also spent a lot of time in the library, especially during exam season. I always pushed myself to go through every single chapter because I never wanted to walk into an exam and face a question I could not tackle simply because I had not covered it”.
Thembelihle Khwezi Radebe is “still buzzing and incredibly grateful” to have been named the best-performing student. This second-year Human Resource Management student in the Faculty of Management Sciences said that working in groups has been a big part of her journey, “It has taught me a lot about collaboration and balancing different perspectives. I have also had to put in long hours of solo study, sometimes zoning out completely. Staying in the University residence has not been a distraction; I can work even when it is noisy, and I appreciate the community.
The students’ grand performances brought great joy to their families and their lecturers. Elias Dala, the Head of the Department of Construction Management and Quantity Surveying, said that Myeza has drawn positive attention to the department. Dala said that students will now consider MUT seriously as a place to study.
Fakazile Myeza, Ntokozo’s aunt, feels we are “delighted. Now we know why she was not available, as she said in posts. We are delighted as a family.”
Ntokozo Radebe, Thembelihle Radebe’s aunt, also said she was very “happy. Thembelihle is a very dedicated person. She would always tell us she was busy. We are very proud of her”, Fakazile said.
