Even before finalising the formalities of the proposed working relationship between the University and AmaZulu Football Club, the two organisations are already collaborating, driven by a common desire to help those in need. The month of July has offered the two organisations an excellent opportunity to show care for a local school. The Deputy Director of the University’s Sport and Recreation Unit, Siyabulela Mkwalo, said that they were looking into the future together. “This structured engagement marks the beginning of a collaborative relationship between the club and the Institution, paving the way for a stable future partnership. AmaZulu FC, as a professional football club, has a greater footprint that will create numerous opportunities for the benefit of our football players, and the growth of MUT Sport at large,” said Mkwalo. Two University divisions, the Sport and Recreation Unit and the Community Engagement and Development directorate (CEAD), and the AmaZulu FC are at Mafukuzela Primary School where they are painting the walls and fixing broken windows. AmaZulu FC’s PRO, Philani Ndlela, said they want to restore hope to the learners of the school. The initiative, which is the football club’s brainchild, aligns with Mandela’s philosophy that “everything is in the people’s hands”; this was an opportunity for the two organisations to make a tangible difference in the lives of learners through infrastructure upliftment. The club will spend R50,000 on the project. Mkwalo defined the act as a “great initiative to enhance community engagement and drive social development in a former school of our Chancellor, Sandile Zungu. Zungu is also the owner of AmaZulu FC.  Mkwalo also said the project gives them a chance to show that they care.
