The Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) has congratulated the Umlazi District on its excellent academic performance, describing the results as a source of pride for the province and a strong foundation for the future of higher education.
MUT Acting Vice-Chancellor, Dr Anette Mienie, expressed that the exceptional results herald a bright future for the University, emphasising that the Class of 2025 cohort will embody the high standards achieved across KwaZulu-Natal. “These results signify that the learners entering MUT in 2026 will embody the academic excellence achieved by the KZN Province. We are excited to welcome a cohort of well-prepared and motivated students,” said Dr Mienie.
Dr Mienie emphasised that the University’s ongoing engagement with the schools in Umlazi has been instrumental in providing essential support. MUT has systematically visited high schools throughout the district to deliver career guidance, disseminate information on available academic courses at MUT, and highlight pathways after graduation.
This initiative facilitates informed decision-making among learners regarding their futures and contributes to their academic and professional development. “This work is firmly aligned with MUT’s Anchor Strategy, which seeks to contribute meaningfully to building a better Umlazi Township. Our Anchor Strategy aims to revitalise Umlazi socially and economically, and I am excited that, in our own way, we have indirectly added to this success,” she said.
She further emphasised that MUT’s involvement goes beyond recruitment, with many lecturers actively supporting schools, particularly in mathematics and science.
“The fact that our academics are working alongside schools demonstrates that MUT is deeply embedded in the township. We are not an ivory tower institution; we are part of the community we serve,” Dr Mienie added.
Looking ahead to the start of the academic year, the Acting Vice-Chancellor expressed optimism as the University prepares for student registration.
“As we commence our registration next week, we do so with a positive outlook, knowing that we are receiving quality students. I will personally be visiting new students next week,” said Dr Mienie.
Dr Mienie commended the excellent work Mbali Mkhize, Senior Director: Department of Marketing and Communications; and Zama Sishi, Stakeholder Relations in the same department, are doing in strengthening MUT’s relationship with our local schools. We hope to welcome many students who have met MUT through their initiates.
MUT reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships with local schools and communities, positioning education as a key driver of opportunity and long-term development in Umlazi and beyond.
