As the first female Vice-Chancellor and Principal of MUT, and a native of Umlazi Township, where the University is located, Professor Nokuthula Sibiya brought personal resonance to the visit to California State University, Sacramento (CSUS), USA, on 8 May 2025.
“I was born in Umlazi, studied by candlelight, and dreamed beyond my circumstances. I know what it means to have talent but not the tools. That is why I lead, not just to change policy, but to change possibilities,” Professor Sibiya said. Under her leadership, MUT is evolving from a historically disadvantaged Institution into a forward-thinking University that tackles pressing challenges that include youth unemployment, digital transformation, and sustainable development. The University has enrolled over 13,000 students, many of whom are first-generation university attendees.
Professor Sibiya highlighted Sacramento State’s alignment with MUT’s values, especially its commitment to inclusive excellence, civic engagement and student success. “CSUS is more than a partner; it is a blueprint,” Professor Sibiya noted. “Your Hornet Honour Code is not just a student charter; it is a framework for responsible global citizenship,” Professor Sibiya said.
