Campaign driver called it: “shaping and owning our next chapter”
On 29 April 2025, MUT’s draft Strategy 2026–2030 was officially presented by the Directorate of Institutional Planning and Research (DIPR) to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nokuthula Sibiya, and her Executive Management Committee (EMC). This was the first time the draft was reviewed at the executive level, following a rich consultative process with MUT’s internal stakeholders — students, academic and support staff, and leadership across the Institution.
The DIPR, under the leadership of Dr Liile Lerato Lekena-Bayaga, has led the entire process. The strategy is the product of months of institutional reflection and planning. Dr Lekena-Bayaga, Acting Senior Director of DIPR, said that preparatory work began in February 2024, building on the mid-term review of the 2020–2025 strategy.
Dr Lekena-Bayaga said the EMC received the draft with great enthusiasm, offering robust, thoughtful feedback that further affirmed the direction of the strategy. “The energy in the room reflected a collective sense of ownership and purpose,” said Dr Lekena-Bayaga. Dr Lekena-Bayaga’s reflection on the meeting is philosophical. “That moment felt like a woman about to give birth — exciting, nerve-wracking, but deeply beautiful. I am grateful for the MUT community’s willingness to walk every step of the way with us. This strategy was not imposed by management — it came from the people. It is truly ours,” said Dr Lekena-Bayaga.
The Institution’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Nokuthula Sibiya emphasised the importance of a realistic strategy and “a plan that speaks to our unique identity as MUT”.
The final institution-wide presentation will happen on 30 May 2025. Dr Lekena-Bayaga asked staff to look out for the call and RSVP from the Department of Marketing and Communication. Dr Lekena-Bayaga added that Council approval is anticipated by end of June 2025.
