
“We are proud to announce that Dr Motheo Meta Tjebane, a Lecturer in the Department of Construction Management & Quantity Surveying at Mangosuthu University of Technology, has been selected as a finalist in the 2025 South African Women in Science Awards (SAWiSA), under the Doctoral Fellowship category in Engineering.” This announcement was made by Maphuti Madiga, Deputy Director: Emerging Researchers Programme, at the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) on 9 July 2025. Hosted by the DSTI, the SAWiSA awards celebrate outstanding women researchers whose work contributes significantly to South Africa’s scientific and innovation landscape. Dr Tjebane’s selection is a testament to her dedication, innovation, and impact in the field of construction management and digital transformation.
Dr Tjebane’s recently completed PhD research at the University of Johannesburg focused on developing an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-led framework for asset information management in South African hospitals. The project aims to enhance hospital operations by improving asset tracking, maintenance, and lifecycle management, using machine learning and predictive analytics. Dr Tjebane said her research work aligns with South Africa’s Decadal Plan for Science, Technology, and Innovation, particularly in the areas of digital transformation and health innovation.
Dr Tjebane has numerous peer-reviewed journal publications in Frontiers in Built Environment, Sustainability (MDPI), Drones (MDPI), and Infrastructure Asset Management. Dr Tjebane has also contributed to four book chapters and numerous conference presentations. Her achievements not only highlight her personal excellence but also bring pride to MUT and inspire future generations of women in Science and Engineering. Dr Tjebane said that she very proud for being recognised among the top women in science. “I am also very grateful for the support I have received from the Faculty of Engineering. This recognition motivates me to continue pushing boundaries,’ Dr Tjebane said.
