In an exciting turn of events for Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT), President Dr Luke Wood of California State University, Sacramento is set to lead a delegation to South Africa and will spend two days at MUT on 5 and 6 November. This visit marks an extraordinary occurrence, as it comes less than 15 months after the visit last year by Dr Larry Robinson, who was President at the Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University to MUT. Such frequent visits are a rarity among top universities, where presidents typically prioritise donor meetings and fundraising over direct collaborations.
Professor Nokuthula Sibiya, MUT Vice-Chancellor and Principal, expressed her enthusiasm for Dr Wood’s visit, noting its significance in elevating MUT’s profile on the global stage. “This visit puts MUT on the map and gives us the opportunity to showcase what we can achieve,” she stated. “It is a chance for our voices to be heard, for us to attract investment from partners, and to foster collaboration.”
The visit holds immense potential for MUT, particularly in its engagement with government partners. Discussions will encompass critical local government bodies, including the eThekwini municipality and the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature. California State University, Sacramento has previously established collaborations with the Gauteng Legislature, and this connection has opened doors for MUT to forge links with the KZN Legislature as well.
Among the highlights of Dr Wood’s visit will be a public lecture aimed at inspiring the MUT community. This event promises to be an enriching experience, providing insights and encouragement to the next generation of innovators and leaders. Additionally, roundtable discussions with senior managers at MUT are planned to explore strategies for advancing the university’s agenda and goals.
As anticipation builds for Dr Wood’s visit, it is clear that this visit represents an academic exchange and a significant step towards greater collaboration and support for MUT. The momentum generated from this engagement could pave the way for future partnerships, ultimately enhancing the university’s impact both locally and internationally. The MUT community is eager to welcome Dr Wood, ready to embark on a journey of shared knowledge and opportunity. Summing up the visit’s purpose, Dr Boatamo Mosupye, Dean of Students and Chief Administration Officer of the Black Honors College from Sac State said, “I know the MUT VC does not believe in MoUs gathering dust. It is a great honour for us to reciprocate the visit and follow up on the commitments that we made.”
