Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) is pleased to announce the appointment of Tebello Mofokeng as the new Deputy Director: Management Information, within the Directorate for Institutional Planning and Research (DIPR). With a distinguished background in data systems, strategic planning, and digital transformation, Mofokeng brings a wealth of experience and a future-focused vision for driving institutional excellence through data.
Tebello Mofokeng is a seasoned Information Technology leader, with extensive experience in Management Information Systems (MIS), Higher Education Management Information Systems (HEMIS), Data Analytics, Institutional Planning, Institutional Research, and IT Governance. He previously served as Head of MIS at the University of Venda, where he led data integration, business intelligence, and statutory reporting initiatives that supported strategic decision-making and compliance with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).
Mofokeng holds a Management Development Programme (MDP) qualification from the University of Cape Town (UCT) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Entrepreneurial Management and Leadership from the University of Venda. He is also certified in SQL, ITIL, VMware, and Cisco technologies. Passionate about aligning IT systems with institutional goals, Mofokeng uses technology to improve data quality, empower decision-makers, and advance student success.
Mofokeng said he applied for the position at MUT because it aligns perfectly with his passion for using data and technology to drive institutional effectiveness in the higher education sector. “MUT’s commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and social impact resonates with my professional values and vision.”
In his new role, Mofokeng will lead the University’s Management Information portfolio, ensuring the integrity and timely submission of HEMIS data, producing high-level institutional reports, and supporting performance monitoring and planning processes. A key part of Mofokeng’s work will involve leveraging decision-support tools, such as HEDA, JasperSoft, and Oracle SQL Developer, to enable evidence-based planning, enhance data accessibility, and inform strategic resource allocation.
Mofokeng’s previous success at the University of Venda, where he integrated multi-source data, automated reporting processes, and built dashboards to track student performance and institutional targets, positions him well to deliver similar innovations at MUT. Mofokeng also contributed to student success initiatives by using data to identify risk areas and improve learning outcomes.
The Acting Senior Director of the directorate, Dr Liile Lekena-Bayaga, said that MUT can look forward to a strengthened decision-making environment as Mofokeng bridges the gap between IT, institutional planning, and executive management with precision and purpose.
