Next week marks a significant milestone in the academic journey of Mangosuthu University of Technology—25 years since the founding of the Research Office. This office has grown from modest beginnings into a powerhouse of innovation, scholarly excellence, and social impact. At the helm of this incredible journey stands Dr Anette Mienie, currently serving as Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation, and Engagements (RIE), whose visionary leadership, unwavering resolve, and deep belief in the transformative power of research have shaped what the office has become today.
The early days were not without challenge. The landscape was still in the process of development, and resources were scarce. But where others saw obstacles, Dr Mienie saw opportunity. With courage and conviction, Dr Mienie built the office from the ground up, assembling a team of passionate academics and staff who were committed to the idea that research could catalyse change, empowerment, and progress.
“At that time in administration,” Dr Mienie recalls, “it was I, the late Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Aaron Ndlovu, the DVCs Professor Edmund Zingu and Dr Yolisa Mbele, who possessed the terminal qualification, then. May their souls rest in peace.” Through hard work, determination and ambition, academics and staff soon attained Master’s qualifications and PhDs. And the rest is history.
Indeed, it is. That history is etched with milestones of perseverance and progress. The Research Office, once a small administrative unit, has evolved into a dynamic and inspiring environment where ideas take root and flourish. It became a place where academics were not only encouraged to dream but supported in turning those dreams into realities that addressed real-world problems. Next Friday, the very same office will also inaugurate the first post-graduate degrees office in August.
“Our Research Office became a beacon of hope and possibility,” says Dr Mienie. “Staff began visiting my office, and ideas emerged. Now, as we celebrate our silver jubilee, we reflect on the incredible legacy that has been established. It is a legacy filled with stories of resilience, innovation, and empowerment.”
Many will attest to that legacy. Under Dr Mienie’s guidance, the Research Office has not only supported the rise of countless researchers and academics but also positioned MUT as an Institution with a growing footprint in national and global research landscapes.
Dr Mienie’s foresight, mentorship, and tireless work ethic—combined with the dedication of her team—have laid a foundation that will support future generations of scholars and innovators for decades to come.
As MUT commemorates 25 years of excellence, the Institution salutes Dr Anette Mienie for her extraordinary leadership and the enduring legacy she continues to build. The Research Office at MUT is not just a directorate; it is a testament to what vision, heart, and purpose can achieve.
Congratulations, Dr Mienie, on 25 transformative years. Here is to the next chapter in research excellence.
