As Women’s Month draws to a close, Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) celebrates a moment of pride and honour. Professor Nokuthula Sibiya, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of MUT, has been officially nominated for the prestigious Gagasi FM Shero Awards 2025, in the Education category.

The Shero Awards, now in their ninth year, were held on Saturday, 23 August at the Premier Splendid Inn Hotel in Umhlanga, Durban. Professor Sibiya, who was unable to attend, requested that Dr Nthabiseng Mosala-Bryant, Senior Director of the Library at MUT, receive the award on her behalf.

The Shero Awards are more than just a celebration; they are a powerful platform that recognises women whose work and leadership are transforming KwaZulu-Natal and beyond. In a province bursting with resilient, visionary women, Professor Sibiya’s nomination is a testament to her unwavering commitment to education, transformation and equity.

In nominating her, Gagasi FM reflected her journey: “As a leader in your field within KwaZulu-Natal, you are, no doubt, well acquainted with the challenges faced by women as they strive for personal and professional advancement…”

Indeed, Professor Sibiya has not only led from the front in academia but has also carved new pathways for women in science, policy and community development. Professor Sibiya’s recent presentation at the EnergyWaterFoodClimate nexus summit in Hungary highlighted a bold, women-led vision for Africa, one where unemployment, hunger, and climate risks are tackled through research, innovation, and inclusive leadership.

To be nominated in a year where Gagasi FM continues to reach over 1.3 million listeners, and as the only regional commercial radio station ranked in South Africa’s top 10, makes the recognition even more impactful.

To Professor Sibiya, the nomination is not just a personal honour, but a recognition of the hard work of every woman who dares to lead, serve, and uplift others.

From the entire MUT community, congratulations, Professor Sibiya. You are our SHERO.
