MUT has appointed seasoned Psychologist, Fikile Gumada, as a student counsellor to bolster the University’s efforts in providing holistic student support services to enable students in meeting their full potential. The appointment comes at a time when mental illness statistics continue to grow across South Africa. He has been practising as an Independent Counselling Psychologist for almost 15 years. Fikile believes this diverse working experience will empower MUT students and the University at large..
“I have 24 years of diverse formal working experience in various sectors, including higher education and the corporate sector. With a huge interest, experience and expertise in facilitating workshops around the areas of diversity and inclusion, managing self-mastery and Community Psychology, I believe my contribution to MUT will be a benefit to the MUT student community as well as the University as a large,” said Fikile. He is a Health Professional Council of South Africa registered psychologist with a Master’s degree in Social Sciences (Counselling Psychology) which he completed at the then University of Natal – Pietermaritzburg in 2001.
Fikile’s appointment came at an opportune time when tertiary students are going through several new challenges such as having to adapt to online learning and coping with the many losses that has ravaged families as a result of Covid-19.
