Executive staff, like Vice-Chancellors, spend most of their time in offices and in meetings. This robs them of an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the general environment where they work, and as such they may not take decisions that are well-informed. Lizwi Masondo, the University Health and Safety Officer, said that it was for this reason that the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Enoch Duma Malaza, and other relevant stakeholders within the University took an observation campus walk-about on 17 January 2020. The campus walk-about’s main purpose was to get familiar with the conditions of the facilities around the University, and then decide what had to be done to improve them in terms of the Strategic Plan 2025.

Masondo said the walk-about would result in relevant departments compiling action plans to improve the conditions. “The conditions of student residences is a high priority; residence should improve student life. Residences are the home away from home to students,” said Lizwi.
