Where and when to apply

All first-year applications to study at MUT are submitted through the Central Applications Office (CAO) online at www.cao.ac.za.  This is a simplified way of applying for more than one programme, using one application form, and paying a single application fee.  You can track the progress of your application by going to www.cao.ac.za and enter your CAO number, or sending an email to enquiries@cao.ac.za or call +27 268 4444.

When you make your application through CAO, remember that MUT will give preference to those students who meet the admission requirements for a particular programme, and those that have made MUT their first choice.

Applications open in January and close on 30 September with late applications accepted until 30 November.

Important Closing Dates:

  • Faculty of Engineering – first semester applications: 30 September
  • Faculty of Engineering – second semester applications: 31 May
  • Faculty of Natural Sciences: 30 September
  • Analytical Chemistry – second semester applications: 31 May

MUT My First Choice

The number of spaces for first-time entering students is around 3500 across all three faculties. By the end of October, Mut receives over 80 000 applications from first-time entering students. The selection process is quite difficult and without a doubt, MUT selects those that chose MUT first, provided they meet our selection requirements.

Each year, thousands of students ask why they should apply on time and make MUT their first choice. Here are some of the reasons:

  • Making MUT your first choice is the ultimate way to demonstrate your interest in MUT. This is an opportunity for you to differentiate yourself from the rest of the crowd.
  • Competition is keen. Each year MUT receives over 80,000 applications. Putting MUT first gives your application a better chance for consideration.
  • If you meet the qualification requirements, your application will be given immediate attention. You could be one of the first among your classmates to own a MUT student card!
