Department of Communication appoints seasoned academic as its head

Professor Sandiso Ngcobo

The Department of Communication at Mangosuthu University of Technology has a new head. Professor Sandiso Ngcobo is now Head of the Department. Professor Ngcobo, a well-published academic, has been working in the department for many years.

He described the appointment as “an exciting and challenging moment” in his career after spending about 20 years at MUT focussing and “excelling mainly on teaching, conducting research and community engagement projects.  Indeed, I have won awards in teaching excellence and research. I now have to test and develop the management aspect of my skills, while not totally ignoring the main three pillars of the University,” said Professor Ngcobo.

He said that his job now requires “mobilising colleagues in our department, and recruiting new ones who will drive these three aspects, which are teaching, research and community engagement”.

Professor Ngcobo said that they were currently working on developing a qualification that would encompass communication, technology and languages. He said that they were planning to add international languages, such as Mandarin and French, to the local South African languages. As a build-up to this ambition, they were recruiting staff that would assist in ensuring that, “as we continue to service other departments we are also able to produce capable and employable graduates in our programme,” said Professor Ngcobo.

Professor Ngcobo thanked Dr Thobekile Luthuli, the previous Head of Department, for being “very generous with information, and in delegating meaningful duties that assisted me to grow as a manager”. He said that either than that, it was hard work that resulted in him earning this promotion.

Professor Ngcobo said that he would continue with his research, as he was able to find a balance between doing research and the administrative duties that come with this position.
