Three Marketing second year students have benefited from the services of Mthokozisi Gumede, an MUT Marketing graduate with a 98% average in Statistics. Mthokozisi assists Siyabonga Makhoba, Ntokozo Qwabe, and Mandisa Mvubu – who are all second year students. There are 1 197 students that Mthokozisi and his fellow tutors assist with Statistics.
Statistics is generally regarded as a difficult subject and a scarce skill. The three students are the best out of the lot that are being tutored by Mthokozisi and his fellow tutors. The 1 200 students are from the Marketing, Human Resources and Management, Accounting, and Surveying. Mthokozisi is a tutoring coordinator. Other tutors are Nkosinathi Gcabashe, Andile Ngcobo, Ziphozenkosi Buthelezi, Mangaliso Cwele, and Aphiwe Simelane. Mthokozisi says the common challenges are that most students did Maths Literacy; they are not comfortable with anything that involves calculating. “We use different strategies to get them interested. For instance, we highlight the top performers, and give them something to motivate them. This year we called the top performer’s parents when we were giving them prizes. Some parents also received prizes because of their children’s good performance,” said Mthokozisi.
Mthokozisi also assists lecturers at MUT with Statistics for their studies. Some of these academics are studying towards their Master’s and PhDs. Mthokozisi once assisted a senior director from industry who was studying towards a Master of Business Administration.
