National Assembly Portfolio Committee

Committee on higher education and training visits MUT “To be where we are now in terms of corporate governance has improved transparency and democracy. The change of culture towards excellence has been phenomenal. It is a model for the rest of the country and the committee should support MUT”, said Mr Trueman Goba, an external council member, citing how MUT has been turned around by the current leadership. He was speaking when the Portfolio Committees (PC) in higher education and training visited MUT on 27 January 2011. The PC, which visits tertiary institutions, processes legislation and conducts oversight over departments for which they have a responsibility. Setting the tone, Advocate Motswane Ishmael Malale, leader of the PC, explained the oversight visit encapsulates all visits they have made - and are still to make, in order to have a clearer picture of the challenges at universities so they could make appropriate recommendations. The VC, Professor Mashupye Kgaphola, made a presentation which showed the state of MUT, and also focused on MUT’s transformation agenda, and challenges MUT continues to face regarding students’ residences and student debt. The SRC and NEHAWU had a closed
session with the PC, in which they discussed their concerns. Advocate Malale recommended a task team from all stakeholders that would discuss issues and make a submission to the PC.
