VISION

The Department of Community Extension will be a leader amongst the institutions of technology, focused on empowering students and communities towards gaining the skills required to promote resource management and sustainable development.

MISSION

This will be achieved by:

  • Engaging in research aimed at developing and adopting new and existing technologies that are competitive and relevant to communities in the SADC region.
  • Incorporating knowledge and skills gained through research and community engagement into the curriculum to produce quality graduates.
  • Engaging with students and communities through teaching and innovative methods to develop skills, knowledge, values and attitudes that assist them on improving their quality of life, resource management and sustainable development.

PURPOSE OF THE COURSE

The qualifying learner will be able to provide and manage agricultural, health and community development services independently and/or under supervision where required, contributing to the improvement of the quality of life for both rural and urban societies.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

National Senior Certificate with rating codes:

English First Additional Language (4) or English Home Language (4) and Agricultural Science (4) or and Consumer Studies (4) or and Life Sciences & Geography (4) or and Life Sciences & Economics (4).

OR

Senior Certificate (or equivalent) with a minimum of “E” symbol in English on Higher Grade or “D” symbol on the Standard Grade. Pass mark in Home Economics, or Agricultural Science with a minimum of “E” symbol on the Higher Grade or “D” symbol on the Standard Grade is compulsory.

OR

A pass mark in Biology and Geography and/or Biology and any commercial subject with a minimum of “E” symbol on the Higher Grade or “D” symbol on the Standard Grade is compulsory. People with relevant work experience on Agriculture/Home Economics or Community Development are also given a preference.

WORK INTEGRATED LEARNING

No formalised period of work integrated learning is included in this course, but compulsory community service projects and field training courses are an integral part of the studies. Students failing to attend these practical sessions, or failing to meet the requirements laid down for evaluation in these sessions, will not gain examination entry for that subject, irrespective of any test marks attained.
